16/7/1543 - The town was assaulted by the French corsair Roberto Ball and plundered. The towns Governor and soldiers have only just gone inland to put down an Indian rebellion, leaving the undefended. The town refused to pay a tribute, and was almost destroyed - ships in the harbour sunk, crops destroyed, anaimals slaughtered, wooden buildings burnt down. The citizens were so dejected that men, ammunition and 3000 pesos were sent to try and rebuild the town.
1555 - attacked by French corsairs under Sore
4/1559 - attacked by French under Cote, demainding a tribute of 15,600 pesos
1595 - attacked by Francis Drake who burnt several buildings.
12/12/1596 - attacked by Sherley, and taken almost unopposed. He was convinced the town was poor, and made off only with cannon and rescued prisoners.
