The major settlement on the northern shotres of Panama, the town was destroyed in 1596 and replaced in importance by Portobello in 1594.
12/6/1572 - Surprise assault by Cimaroons and almost overruns the town
26/7/1572 - Assaulted by Francis Drake. Town had a platform with 6 cannon facing the harbour. A hill to the east of the town was in the process of being fortified, but no cannon had been installed. The town gold was stored in the King's Treasure House, with the silver stored in the Governor's mansion. While Drake won the battle, his nervous men quite the town without ransacking it. 1573 - Francis Drake seizes a silver mule train nearby
6/1/1596 - Attacked by Francis Drake. The town was abandoned and defended by Governor Diego de Amaya and 60 soldiers, who quickly retreated. The town was plundered for what it may have still held, before they set off for Panama. Being beaten so severely there, Drake burnt the town to the ground in reprisal on 12/1/1596. The citizens abandoned the town and moved to Portobelo.
