Havana - The Towns of Piracy

A large Spanish centre on the northern shore of Cuba.

In 1543, a French ship from the fleet of Roberto Ball extracts a tribute in exchange for not burning the undefended town.

9-11/7/1555 - attacked by French corsairs under Sore, who extracted a tribute of 4500 pesos. The 100 citizens raised a force of 6 cavalrymen and 4 foot soldiers, plus the Governor Angulo and 40 indians. The French seiged the fort held by 26 soldiers, and after 2 days captured the fort and ransomed the Spanish prisoners for 30,000 pesos. The Spanish counter attacked with 35 residents, 220 negros and 80 indians. However, most of the French escaped, killing the hostages and desecrating the churches.

10/1555 - attacked

29/5/1586 - Francis Drake contemplated assaulting the town, which was defended by governor Gabriel de Lujan who recruited 230 volunteers to supplement his military garrison, plus 300 soldiers from mexico, totalling some 700 harquebusiers and 300 soldiers. Drake chose not to assault the town.
