The main settlement on the Antigua Island was St Johns. Pirates were hung here on Rat Island in the harbour. Five men were hung here in 1723.
In 1716 the slaves of Antigua had grown very impudent and insulting, causing their masters to live in fear of an insurrection. A number of them took off to join the pirates.
