Eureka's
25mm Pax Limpopo!
Last Update 10th September 2005
A so far range of figures made by Eureka
Minitaures in Melbourne, Australia, for a game based on an alternate Victorian
universe, where Queen Victoria has married a zulu king, there are dinosaurs, and
the cavalry ride unicycles in a bizarre game of tickling steam driven exploding
pigs. All heaps of fun. More figures to come. Male figures sculpted by Mike
Broadbent of Sydney, Australia, and females by Neil of Shadowforge. Regiment
figures are about 32mm eye to toe, the Hypostyle figures about 28mm eye to toe.
Steam powered infantry are about 37mm eye to toe.

Female Zulu Tribeswomen (2 variants each)
- PAXR13 Colonel Simpson's Guards with
Spear - 2 pieces
- PAXR14 Colonel Saunder's Guards with
Spear and bird shaped hairstyle - 2 pieces
- PAXR15 Grenadier Troopers For above
2 regiments with spear & slung rifle - 2 pieces
- PAXR16 Colonel Simpson's Scouts with
Spear - 2 pieces female 'Zulu' spearwoman, standing in typical
African leaning on spear pose as is all the other female Zulus in his range.
She is essentially the same as the other girls as well in appearance, except
for her hair and accessories. There are 2 variants, one standing with both
feet on the ground, the other essentially the same but leaning causally on
one leg with the other raised and crossed over the other as if rubbing some
errant ant crawling up her shin. Her hair is high in a Marge Simpson sort
of style, but not quite as extreme. Around this is tied a ribbon which holds
the units symbol to her hair. I am assuming it is a long and kinked fresh
reed, or else is it could also be a rigid snake. She wears a skimpy grass
skirt which falls only at the front and rear leaving the majority of her legs
bare. She is topless, except for a separate backpack, and straps. She wears
a simple necklace, which might have long teeth on it, or something similar.
She has the gold bands about her neck, and large hoop earrings. Both figures
have an anklet, and one has a wrist bangle. Both girls carry a 5' spear with
a 1.5' wide blade on top of that. Figure Height 30mm. No significant figure
flaws.
- PAXR17 Officer for above troops (no
variant) Only one variant of this type, a Zulu woman in British
uniform. She wears a service jacket with epaulettes and gold fringe, the jacket
is worn open with no shirt beneath. She wears shin high boots with spurs,
and those pants I seem to associate with German officers which have that baggy
pocket that sticks out like a flap. She has a strap across her chest, which
supports a plain sword scabbard. She holds in her left hand what looks like
a small fly swat. She has the same gold bands about her neck as the troopers,
and the same large hoop earrings. Her hair is cut short with a flat top.

- PAXP5 The Professors - Siamese twin
- 2 genius heads on one body
- PAXP6 Belly Dancing Spy
- PAXP7 Dog
- PAXP8 Otto von Tannenbaum - Prussian
spy an egg head Colonel Klink looking man with sideburns and no other
hair. He stands casually left arm down holding his gloves while his right
hand is cupped at his waist holding a cigarette. He wears a service jacket
with the overlapping coat front thing, and an iron cross hangs at his neck.
He has a moderately prominent epaulettes and collar. He wears shin boots and
those flappy German pants mentioned above. In his belt is a pistol holster.
There are no significant flaws, Figure Height 29mm
- PAXP9 Shaftsbury & O'toole in
rubber brontosaurus suit a rather odd subject, but probably suited to
the Limpopo game. The figure consists of 2 heroes from the game dressed up
in a rubber brontosaurus suit. Shaftsbury is in his British officers uniform,
O'Toole in his jacket and bowler hat. The two men's chest and heads pop out
of the rubber suit. The dinosaur suit probably isn't perfect, but under the
circumstance, doesn't look too bad at all. Overall the item is sound, but
the legs and maybe the head of the suit isn't quite right, but not significantly.
Overall length 94mm, Eye height of men 35mm
- PAXP10 Hungarian Ambassador
This guy is the consummate spy looking figure for the time, and also could
pass as a Mr Hyde figure. He wears long pants, shoes and a top hat. He has
a waist length cloak, which he has wrapped fully about himself. His face is
half hidden by the cloak and he looks almost like a vampire figure in this
way. No flaws on this figure. Height 28mm
- PAXP11 Professor Niagra and his
occular viagra 2nd in pic A quaint monopoly sort of figure. He appears
as though a bit of a scientist of the time. He wears an open knee length coat,
long pants, and vest. He carries a short simple cane with a globe top. He
wears a top hat, his hair shortish but stuck out sort of wildly. His unusual
feature is the glasses he wears, which basically make him look as though he
has telescopic eyes. The figure has no significant flaw, the only minor oddity
being the flashing and telescopic connection to the face. Figure height 29mm
- PAXP12 Heironomous Pratt andhis
audio hat - 1st in pic A short, dumpy ageing scientific type. For his
low height, he wears a knee length coat, top hat, long pants and vest. His
oddity is the two hearing trumpets fixed to his ears and by a cable to his
top hat. He also wears a set of spectacles and is heavily bearded. He stands
straight, with his hands held behind his back. Another good monopoly figure.
Height 23mm
- PAXP13 Professor McHoots &
his circular boots - third in pic An energetic action pose, the professor
is 'running' along on his proprietary style skates, the boots of which are
shin high. He wears a cap, jacket, cardigan, and long pants. He alsowears
along scarf flapping away behind him. He has side burns and moustache, but
no beard. Figure height 31mm
- PAXP14 Colonel Saunders
- PAXP15 Colonel Simpson on a reclining
sofa litter carried by 4 tribeswomen plus a tribeswoman food bearer 9 pieces
- PAXP16 Luna Shape Shifter (Recliner
lounge) 3 pieces small lounge seat with half back for reclining upon.
Paints up well, if fiddly to assemble. 30mm long, 18mm high
- PAXP17 Hardlove Steam Chair - armoured
steam driven tricycle with long skeletal metal arms - assembled
- PAXP18 Scottish Gorilla Impersonator
- PAXP19 Mr Darwin - Half man half
gorilla
- Shaftsbury riding a penny
farthing. He and the bike are separate pieces. The bike stands 30mm high
and appears to be a new design for this range. It's not bad, except that the
peddles assembly is not close to the centre of the wheel, maybe 5mm short.
It's probably not noticeable until you think about it. Shaftsbury is about
28mm high, and wears the Victoriana sports/swimming costume. Shaftsbury sits
atop the bike looking suitably lazy. His arms are crossed on his chest, and
his eyes look very droopy. His belly is a little paunchy too, which goes against
his usual dashing character. Maybe he has been taking it easy too much now
he's on top. The figure casting is neat and crisp, and it's a tidy little
vignette.
- Shaftsbury as a hussar officer,
standing very dashingly in full uniform, pelise slung over his shoulder. He
stands side on, left foot forward, right hand held cocked with a long barreled
space pistol held vertically. The left arm is under the pelise. Cast separate
is a long hussars sabre which fixes horizontally across the back of the knees.
Casting and detailing is great, and he certainly looks the part. Eye height
29mm.
- Shaftsbury the barrel boy.
A bizarre creation, he stands hands on hips type pose, but imagine his hands
are held out a few inches from the body. He wears tattered long trouser, and
has heavy braces on his shoulders. Suspended on the braces is a wooden barrel,
which comes in 2 halves, and sit around his hips and drops as far as his shins.
I'm not sure what his purpose might be, but assembled the barrel hides his
pants, so maybe he has been robbed and is making the best with what he got.
His chest and upper arms are very well developed, and he looks the Victorian
action hero. Casting and sculpting is neat, my barrel had a little flash,
but nothing serious.

Pygmies of the Lost World (image under 100 club listing)
- PAXPYG1 Chief (2 pieces)
- PAXPYG2 Witch Doctor
- PAXPYG3 Female Pygmy
- PAXPYG4 Standard Holder (standard not included)
- PAXPYG5 Blow Pipe
- PAXPYG6 Drummer
- PAXPYG7 Warriors (4 variants)
- PAXPYG8 Pygmy riding giant
ant from the Fantozy range. The ant has been reviewed before (no orc rider
here), but basically is 85mm long, 115mm wide and 50mm high. He comes in 8
parts, main body, 6 legs, and head. As an ant he is quite good, with a waspish
thorax. He has two holes in the head for antennae supplied by you. The
rider is a typical Limpopo pygmy, short and rounded, with exaggerated
big lipped face and bart simpson hair. He has a head band and a loin cloth
you can't see. He fits upon the ants neck (also fits horses an well), with
his little legs poked out sideways. His right hand is held close like it's
gripping reigns, the left arm held up shaking his short spear. Overall a nice
vignette. Casting and sculpting nice, and a cheaper giant ant you'll not find.
Transports of Delight
- PAXTOD1 Unicycle
- PAXTOD2 Penny farthing
Enemies of the Empire - Prussians
- PAXEE1 Hartleibe Panzer Hoche Fahrad
with key. Armoured penny farthing dalek style The German translation tells
you exactly what it is, but off the top of my head I can't remember the exact
translation. In essence the miniature is an armour encased penny farthing.
This particular one is even more Dalek like than the other armoured penny
farthings in the range, as this one also has a revolving circular turret.
The figure comes in 5 pieces, 4 lead and one in black resin. (Not sure if
they are all black as the last resin piece I received was in the standard
dark brown). Overall assembled height is 48mm (excluding spike) and 43mm long.
I assume the wind up key is an accessory to do with the Limpopo rule system.
As with the other armoured penny farthings, the main front wheel is solid.
While personally this does not detract from the figure, a purist may not like
it. I assume this is to ease the casting process and also give some strength
to support the model above. There is a minor casting line on the turret, but
otherwise the figure is flawless. The turret houses what could be a 38m gun,
and from the viewing slit protrudes a serious looking 6 barreled gatling gun.
Assembly is a dream. The resin body is slightly smaller than the lead base,
to me it was a fine base, to someone else it might be considered slightly
over sized. If you're into alternate Victoriana, this is another interesting
piece from the Limpopo range you should look over. Assembled
- PAXEE2 2 man Prussian War hat team
- PAXEE3 Infantry Advancing I have 5 variants
so far, so possibly there may be more than one code here as yet undescribed
on the Eureka site. Four poses are basically advancing with rifle horizontal
or at port. The fifth is kneeling but still appears to be about to advance.
They are typical German troops of the Victorian era, with spiky helmet, jacket,
long pants and shin boots. Each also carries a blanket roll over the left
shoulder, and each also carries a bayonet in scabbard and two ammunition pouches.
Two also carry sausages as provisions suspended from the belt. All figures
are bearded in some way. There are no flaws on these guys, they are delightful.
Eye height 28mm
- PAXEE4? Turkish Jannissaries with musket
5 variants with seperate sword. Not being my period I had no idea what
these guys were initially about. I ended up painting them in Prussian blue
with yellow caps. Very sexy. These guys are nice solid figures, in long pants,
Turkish boots, short sleeved coat, long sleeved shirt and the cute sock hats.
Their accessories are powder horn hand axe, and ammo pouch. They are armed
with muskets. Poses are standing firing, advancing musket held up at 45 degrees,
across chest. Advancing musket held horizontal. Marching musket over shoulder.
The officer is more ornate, and stands on hand on hip, the other holding a
scimitar. He is bearded. Figure height 27mm
- PAXEE5? More Prussian Infantry Advancing
(sausage infantry)
- PAXEE6? Krieg Hosen - Wind up prussian
robot with pincer and saw arm, plus machine gun. 2 variants, 6 pieces each
"Eye" height 40mm. 2 variants. These are Prussian key driven metal warriors
for the Pax Limpopo range. They are chunky, gear driven robots operated by
a wind up key in their back. They have very heavy astronaut type boots, legs
like the Michelin man, a skull loin decoration and a cast iron torso from
which protrudes a machine gun barrel. The head is a pair of binoculars over
which sits a large spiked Prussian helmet. At their shoulders are large toothed
gears, the arms are large tubes, the right ending in rotary saw blade, the
left in a pair of pincers, possibly with a flame thrower built in as well
into the hollow at the middle of the pincers. The 2 variants are standing
facing forward, or advancing slowly right leg forward. These are cute guys
and very Victoriana, worthy adversaries of the steam powered British infantry.
Casting, sculpting and animation is good.
- Huge Wind up German Armoured Tricycle
with cannon or gatling gun (Resin and metal)
- Prussian Generals (3) - Three exaggerated
and extremely personable and charming Prussian generals. Left hand figure
(19mm) could easily be many a gothic variant dwarf commander. He wears a great
coat, prussian helmet, and super sized mustache. Middle figure (29mm) weaars
a great coat, prussian helmet, and tiny glasses and big ears. Right hand figure
(26mm) is the hungry one. His greatcoat is open revealing boots, prussian
pants, an iron cuirass (I think) and an Iron Cross. He wileds a beer stein
in the right hand, and a super sausage in the left. He has a very undetailed
double headed eagle on top of his prussian helmet. What you can see of his
face is very pig like. He wears a monacle. Excellent alternate victoriana
prussian generals. Probably available separately.

Enemies of the Empire - French
- The Cayenne Newsletter ,
which explains the French position. It's a pdf file which opens in a new window
- Anteater Infantry (Officer, std bearer, drummer,
4 soldiers) - think Franco Prussian War French with an anteater face
- Camel Corps (4 soldiers) - Think exaggerated
camel soldiers in French Foreign Legion gear! Exaggerated cameloids, they
are normal 28mm figs with a huge back hump and big goofy camel heads. The
hands are human, and the feet are normal boots (though the legs are scrawny).
They have separate packs. Poses are marching, firing, en garde, rifle horizontal.
- Camel Command (4) General, Tuba
Player, Standard, Marching soldier. The marcher has a separate pack. The general
uses the same base pose as the earlier soldiers. He stands leaning on a very
wiry desert bush stick. He has a slight beard, bushy eyebrows, some breast
medals and an officer plate on necklace. The next three are based on the same
dolly, but have arms, heads and extra details. The marcher stands casually
in marching pose, and comes with a separate pack. The tuba player comes in
2 pieces, with the flare of the tuba cast as a separate piece. If you look
closely you'll wonder exactly how the tuba winds around his body, but you'd
have to be fussy to even notice. The bearer comes with a dimple in his right
hand to drill out to take the separate standard. It ends up being held forward
at an angle, with the base resting between his feet. The standard has a beaut
exaggerated pot bellied vulture sitting on it.
Accessories
- Raptor Pack. This set comes
with 2 stands of 3 raptors which sit side side by side on a double slotted
metal 'cavalry base'. These are not velociraptors like Jurassic park, but
smaller sleeker raptors. They are roughly 16mm high and each raptor is about
48mm long. The three raptors per stand are sculpted as a unit, and if you
slide one forward, and one back on the slots, they go together reasonably
well. My preference is to use each stand seperately. The figures are nicely
fluid and as a trio look like they are inquisitivley advancing looking for
prey.
- Solo Raptor
- Raptor Racer - raptor with
jockey. Rider eye height nominally 20mm if he were standing up. Model height
27mm and 50mm long. Imagine a youthful Victorian jockey riding a sleek raptor
and you have the idea. He wears long pants, jacket, Victorian cap, boots and
wields a riding crop held at the raptor's tail. He sits on a plain cloth blanket
on the raptor's back, and he holds reins attached to a simple bridle. The
raptor is the simple plain single version released previously as part of the
raptor herd packs (which were 2 groups of three or a solo) For those unfamiliar,
he is a sleek fine boned raptor, not like the velociraptor portrayed in Jurassic
Park movies. The whole item is a one piece casting incorporating the base.
The casting and animation is great.
- Raptor herding dog a small Collie type of
dog in pointing pose. Intended as part of a raptor herding game yet to be
released. No flaws. Figure height 14mm
- The Great Land Ship
- A resin great tank abit like a cross between the WW1 German A7V and steam
technology. 14 resin and 10 metal pieces. 185mm long, 92mm wide, 85mm high.
Armed with one cannon and what looks like 5 recoiless rifle barrels, with
a large basin in the rear back for troops to fire from like a ww2 landing
craft. Currently out of production due to a destroyed mould. One large side
plate not shown, and 2 wheel sets not shown. I ran out of room on the scanner.
Nic has considered sculpting a new tank, but I have received no further updates
on its progress.
- Also suitable is the 100club victorian
sci fi mechanic eye height 27mm, 2pieces. Figure represents a boiler mechanic
sort of figure. He wears what looks like a miner's helmet without the globe,
and has a facemask like a gas mask. He wears overalls, with long sleeved shirt
and heavy gloves. He stands with a spanner in the right hand held at his hips.
There is a second spanner loose as an accessory. Sculpting and animation is
quite good.
- Steam Tankette There are three
resin parts, the body, and two tread/wheel assemblies (not detailed on reverse
side). Imagine a whippet style WW1 tank and you're probably not far off. My
guess is a two crew vehicle. The metal parts consist of boiler chimney, choice
of light cannon barrel or multi barrel machine gun (both supplied), turret
hatch, and commander's upper body wearing pith helmet with glasses and ear
muffs, and he sits in the turret hatch. Length 55mm, height 45mm, width 42mm
- Tankette Driver This
is an upper torso only, meant to be fitted into the little whippet style tank
for the Pax Limpopo range. He is an exaggerated figure, being very thin with
a long face with a rather odd golly gee expression. He wears a plain helmet
with goggles.
