Napoleonic Austria - The 1805 Campaign

Last Update 13th January 2003

Cuirassiers (Heavy Cavalry)

There were 8 regiments in this period. They were composed of 8 squadrons nominally totaling 1100 men. However, on campaign this fell dramatically, particularly after the Ulm surrender. Early on, a regiment may consist of 800 men, but after Ulm the northern regiments fell to as little as 400 men. At Austerlitz regiments fielded only 6 squadrons of as few as 300 men! Early on in the Bavarian invasion, such as at Elchingen, the regiments were further split into 2 squadron formations and parceled out to brigades. Therefore a formation really varies depending on your area of operations, but for an early campaign regiment, there are 16 figures consisting of:

Here we have two bases of Front Rank Cuirassiers. Command base to the left, troopers to the right. Note the buglers red crest and yellow chords for the brass trumpet and he is wearing no cuirass. The officer has a higher crest to his helm, and it is inset with gold detail. [Spot the mistakes? The portmanteau is red, not light grey. The sheepskin saddle trim should be red, not yellow. The cuirass support scales at the shoulder should be black/blackened brass, not yellow. The officers crest should be gold and black, not yellow and black. The red shabraque should have a yellow edging]
