"Keep yourselves to what is old, for that is good; if our ancestors have proved it to be good, why should we not do as they did?" Francis I

Austria limped out of the ill fated war of 1800 suffering badly from the treaty of Luneville signed in February 1801. The foreign minister, Thugut, lost his hold on policy and was replaced by Ludwig Cobenzl, with direct input in foreign matter by both Emporer Francis I and Colloredo. The focus for Austria was to begin a slow change turning into the dreams for a new Europe championed by Metternich, who had just returned to imperial service with a post as the ambassador to Saxony.
